Tattoos and Employment: Should You Go Under the Needle? (part 2)
Posted on : July 1, 2015 By : Wellness
In part one of this two part series we began looking at the issue of tattoos and employment and whether it was a good idea to get a tattoo.
Well now we’re back with part two and we have the two remaining factors that are most commonly brought up in regards to getting a tattoo and how it will affect your employment. First up on the list are employers…
Depends on Employer
Now it is important to state that no two employers are the same and what is acceptable to some may be excessive or undesirable to others. There are certain times though that your tattoo will almost certainly have an effect on your chances of employment.
Generally there are three areas that you should avoid tattooing unless you know specifically that either your current employer is all for them or that your chosen industry is accepting of them. These areas are of course:
- Face
- Neck
- Hands
Whilst some employers will not see these as an issue, there are plenty that will.
Depends on Depiction
One of the biggest factors in a tattoos impact is what the image actually depicts or in the case of words, what they say. As you will see from this blog we did a while back, there are some terrible tattoos out there but the focus for employers will be mostly on whether they are likely to cause offence.
Ensure that your tattoos stay away from any contentious issues and can’t be misconstrued as aggressive and you should be okay.
Unfortunately there are no absolute answers on whether your tattoos will affect your chances of employment, but with all the information you will at least be able make an informed decision.
