Tattoos and Employment: Should You Go Under the Needle? (part 1)
Posted on : June 22, 2015 By : Wellness
One of the biggest debates that people have with themselves before getting a tattoo is what their boss or potential future boss will think of it. Ask many why they don’t have tattoos and the argument over ease of employment comes up over and over again.
Here at Apple Wellness Center we are experts in removing tattoos in Calgary and often see people removing tattoos due to regret and many also claim that they have held them back in the world of work.
With this in mind we thought that in this special 2 part blog we would take a look at the main factors and try to answer definitively whether going under the needle is good or bad for your career.
The Law
There is officially no law that protects tattooed people from being discriminated against for their modifications. In recent years, with increased popularity there has been an increased demand for some set in stone regulations to stop discrimination on these grounds but as of yet nothing has come of it.
Dependant on Industry
As with many appearance factors such as dress code and hair style, whether tattoos are acceptable depends hugely on the industry that you choose to work in. Below we have listed some of the industries in which tattoos are seen unfavourably;
Tattoo NO Goes
- Nursing (not on the hands, neck or face)
- Retailers (some)
- Doctors (not on hands, neck or face)
- Teaching (becoming more lenient but prefers tattoos that can be covered)
Whilst these industries are fine with tattoos that can be covered, tattoos on hands and neck tend to be a no go.
So it’s not really looking good for tattoos in this first section but in our next section we look at other influential factors in your tattoo decision such as placement and the input of individual employers.
In the meantime, if you have already made your mind up to get rid of your tattoo/s then don’t hesitate to contact us and we will be more than happy to help.
