The Effect of Winter on Your Teeth
Posted on : November 18, 2015 By : Wellness
At Apple Wellness Center we conduct everything from podiatry to laser hair removal in Airdrie, but with the changing of the seasons we can become inundated with questions relating to the effect this can have on the body. While teeth can be a sensitive area all year round, people are often worried about the effect of winter on these invaluable assets.
Temperature vs Teeth
Extreme temperature shifts can have an effect on your teeth, so it is no surprise that a switch from the warmer summer to the chillier winter can prove potentially problematic. Despite teeth being an incredibly durable part of the human body, they can indeed be impacted by temperature shifts. The outdoorsy types are likely to feel it the most, with their teeth being subjected to the outdoor temperatures on a more frequent basis, even going as far as potentially causing cracks in the teeth down to the gumline.
The reason for this is down to the effect of temperature on, well… essentially everything! Just like when rocks expand and contract in the desert heat before cooling in the evening, teeth undergo the same. While the desert may be somewhat of an extreme example, these rocks crack so it certainly pays to be conscious of the way you look after your teeth during winter.
Tips to Combat Sensitivity
One neat trick to utilize to prevent the cold getting to your teeth is by simply pulling your scarf up around your mouth. Sounds simple, but it can really help regulate the temperature around your teeth. A further idea is to simply use desensitizing toothpastes which have compounds in them that can serve to block the sensitivity from tooth surface to root.
The importance of teeth, and therefore the surrounding worries, can sometimes mean that the only resort is to visit a specialist; such as our dental professionals at the Apple Wellness Center.
