Tattoo Removal Aftercare

Posted on : September 5, 2014  By : Wellness

After you have undergone laser tattoo removal, aftercare is necessary to ensure that your skin remains healthy and that you don’t develop any unwanted side effects such as infection. Here at the Apple Wellness Center, we will provide you with individual information on how to care for your skin after your laser tattoo removal in Calgary at our specialist clinic.

Laser tattoo treatment causes a superficial skin wound to appear on the surface; in some cases patients can experience swelling, bruising and blisters, however these issues are temporary. Healing is usually completed with 4 weeks, and you are left with natural, tattoo-free skin. But here are a few tips in regards to aftercare that will help with the healing process.

Aftercare Advice

  • After tattoo removal it’s important to keep the treated area clean, but also dry throughout the healing process. First you must clean the area with soap and water – be very gentle, then dry the area by patting it down.
  • Blisters are fairly common after undergoing this treatment, and often occur 8 hours afterwards. This is nothing to be alarmed about; it is a normal part of the healing process and they are a positive indicator that the ink is being removed from your tattoo.
  • Antibiotic ointment or cream may be prescribed, which you should rub gently over any popped blisters and cover with sterile wrappings.
  • If you experience pain, take painkillers but only apply cold compresses 24 hours after completion of the treatment. Avoid taking aspirin though; this can actually increase bruising
  • Swimming and taking a bath is not advised during the blistering or early healing stage. Take light showers to avoid soaking the affected area.
  • When skin is healing it can become itchy and dry, do not allow yourself to pick or scratch at the scab. This will help to prevent infection.
  • Avoid shaving the treated area until the healing process is complete.
  • Wear a high factor sunscreen on the area if it is visible to the sun, for a couple of months after treatment.
