Is Your Child Due Their First Check Up? How You Can Make Your Child’s First Dental Visit a Success

Posted on : August 27, 2015  By : Wellness

As a professional and experienced dentist in Airdrie, we like to pride ourselves on providing a brilliant service for families. We understand that children have different needs and priorities to adults, and therefore we make sure that all our dentists have extensive experience working with children. This means that they know how to put them at ease when it comes to visiting us – we know it can be extremely scary for them.

As a parent, there are certain steps you can take to make sure that your children don’t fear the dentist as they get older. By preparing your child, you can turn a visit to the dentist into something that isn’t a big deal. Here are some of our top tips!

Make Their First Dentist Appointment Whilst They Are Still Young

There are several benefits to taking your child to the dentist whilst they are still only young. The first is that the dentist will be able to identify any early problems that might be present already and then be able to give the right treatment before it gets more serious. They will be able to give you advice on healthy dental habits which you can implement whilst your child is still young.

The second advantage of taking your child to the dentist whilst they are 1-2 years old is that it’s before your child has established their own viewpoint on certain things. Whilst young, they are more likely to accept what you tell them and accept new things.

Play Dentist With Your Child

Children love to play, and they actually learn a lot through their play whilst they are growing up. Whilst they are pretending to be their parents, or a shopkeeper or a teacher; they are learning and developing new skills.

We suggest playing a game of ‘dentist’ with them, as this will highlight the experience in a fun and non threatening way. Doing this just before the dentist visit means that it will still be in their head when they go for their appointment.

Don’t Talk About The Appointment Endlessly Beforehand

Your children are pretty smart, even when young, and they can always sense when you are stressed or nervous about a situation. If you talk a lot about the dentist appointment beforehand, your child will pick up on the fact that you are nervous and this will make them stressed in return. You should simply tell them they are going to the dentist, answer any questions briefly and then don’t bring it up again.

Don’t Bribe Your Child

Although it might be tempting to offer them a reward to not cry when visiting the dentist, you’re actually giving them a reason to be scared. By saying “if you don’t get upset” you are telling them that they have something to get upset over.

If you don’t make it seem like a big deal, then they are less likely to feel nervous or anxious about the visit.

You should encourage healthy dental habits at home at all times. Whether your child loves or loathes their visit, regular checkups are extremely important.
