How to Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Posted on : November 7, 2013  By : Wellness

When we look good, we feel good so when it comes to our smile, bright, clean and white teeth make a huge difference to our confidence, not to mention our health. Maintaining a good oral hygiene regime not only allows us to feel confident flashing our smiles, but also helps us uphold overall health.

The ultimate goal of a good oral hygiene regime is to remove/ prevent formation and build up of plaque and tartar, prevent periodontal (gum) disease and caries (tooth decay) and decrease the occurrence of halitosis (bad breath). In order to ensure that your oral hygiene regime is effective, it’s vital to include the following things in your daily routine.

Brushing your teeth

The Canadian Dental Association (CDA) recommends that individuals brush their teeth at least two times daily and although it seems obvious that brushing your teeth is a vital part of any good oral hygiene regime, a worrying number of people choose to skip brushing their teeth at night. In order to keep your mouth healthy and your teeth shiny, it’s imperative to brush twice daily without fail.

Flossing or using interdental brushes

Flossing or using interdental brushes is important in helping you prevent gum disease by removing food debris and plaque that gets trapped between your teeth. Although it may feel like wasted time, taking just 2 minutes to floss your teeth can increase your overall oral health as well as help you maintain fresh breath.

Avoid foods that are bad for your teeth

Even when eating healthily, your diet can be damaging to your teeth. Foods that are acidic, or high in sugar damage tooth enamel, with acid causing erosion and sugar feeding the acid excreting bacteria in our mouths leading to the same issues. Cutting back on these foods and drinks will improve your overall oral hygiene and help prevent tooth decay.

Get a regular check up

Even with regular care your mouth still needs maintenance, so it’s important that you have a regular check up every 6 months to ensure that your teeth are in top condition and to undergo any treatment needed in order to keep your oral hygiene on track.
