Do Tattoos Really Affect Your Chance of Getting A Job?

Posted on : November 30, 2014  By : Wellness

We’ve all heard the rumours, tattoos can jeopardise an individual’s chance of bagging their dream career, and if they’re visible – you’ve got no chance, mate!

However, how true is this myth, really? Sure, we understand that some industries don’t care about body art or body piercings, but in the ones that do, how much can a tattoo really affect your chances and what are your options?

Here are the good, the bad and the ugly of tattoo vs. job statistics, and a quick look at how much ink can really stain your career. (Stats taken from a survey of 2,700 people)

Which is worse on the job?

42% disapprove of visible tattoos.

55% disapprove of body piercings.

(Of respondents, 12% have visible tattoos, and 3% have face or body piercings.)

Whatever your art, maybe a tribal arm band or dream catcher on your back, any type of tattoo can risk the chance of career progression within a particular industry. The recent study figures (above) from the Pew Research Center found that 40% of people between 18 – 29 years old have at least one tattoo, and body piercings are also growing in popularity – an age group that will be most focused on finding and bagging their dream job!

How much of an effect can tattoos have?

76% of people feel tattoos/piercings hurt their chances of getting a job.

39% of people feel that employees with tattoos/piercings reflect poorly on their employers.

Fortunately, of those interviewed, only 4% report have faced actual discrimination because of their ink and body art, although we are sure this figure is much larger outside of the survey criteria.

The survey also found that younger generations were most likely to have tattoos, and by the age bracket of 60 and older, only 1% were tattooed. Although respondents in all age groups appreciated that tattoos and piercings can hurt a job application, there was a very clear difference of opinion towards tattoo appropriateness in the workplace with only 22% of 18 – 25 year olds thinking them inappropriate, and 63% of people age 60 and older finding tattoos objectionable at work.

Not all industries are anti-tattoo; however, you may find that quite a few are. The choice is yours, and we’re sure that if you continue to job search – you’ll strike lucky and find a job, as long as they are tasteful, of course!
