Delving into your Dentures- What Do Dentists Look For During Your Check Up?

Posted on : May 21, 2015  By : Wellness

We’re willing to bet you are sick of being told how important visiting your dentist regularly is. But have you ever wondered what your dentist is actually looking for when having a good old peek at your teeth?

Well, as a leading dental office in Airdrie, we’re here to tell you exactly what our professional dentists look for when you come in for a check up! With simple dental appointments taking from under 30 minutes up to around an hour, there’s really no valid excuse not to pop in and get those teeth checked out! Who knows, you could save some money preventing serious problems by catching them early!

Dental Decay

Dental decay is one of the main aspects that a dentist will look for when you first step into your dental appointment. This can lead to the need for fillings and other more invasive dental work if not dealt with early.

Decay can be quite hard to detect with the naked eye, so some dentists may prefer to take X Rays to determine if there is any traces of decay under the tooth’s surface. These X Rays are low in radiation, so they are a good way to quickly detect any dental abnormalities.

Plaque

Plaque is a clear coating that collects on your teeth. It comes from the bacteria that live in your mouth and can easily be scraped off with a scraper as it is quite soft, or you can try and reduce the amount of plaque created by switching to a fibrous, raw food orientated diet.

Plaque is one of the leading causes of cavities and tooth decay if not removed with regular cleaning, so your dentist may ask you to pay particular attention to problem areas.

Bad Breath or Halitosis

As well as your teeth, your dentist can also treat any bad breath you may be experiencing. Halitosis (or bad breath) is caused by the breaking down of proteins by the mouth bacteria, and can be combated with certain mouthwashes and toothpastes.

Although bad breath doesn’t cause any dental problems, it could be a sign of a more serious problem which needs to be addressed.

Oral Cancer

Sadly, oral cancer is on the rise and like most other cancers, detecting it early can be life saving. Dental teams will check for oral cancer at every check up you have.

During your examination, the dentist will look at your mouth as a whole, including your tongue, your lips and your jaw. Oral cancer takes many different forms, and it’s important to have a professional check your entire mouth for any it may take. Remember, they can see areas of your mouth that you can’t!

Gum Disease

Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss, so it’s super important to get on top of it before it takes hold.

If you’ve ever experienced swollen or bleeding gums when brushing your teeth, it’s probably time you took a trip to the dentist. If left untreated, the bone in your jaw can begin to decay and eventually your teeth can become loose and possibly fall out.

All of these dental problems can be easily identified and avoided with the right treatment. Dental professionals are here to help you care for your teeth, and only with regular check ups can you avoid expensive, essential dental work.
