5 Foods & Drinks That Stain Your Teeth

Posted on : October 22, 2015  By : Wellness

Everyone dreams of having a white smile, which isn’t surprising since our smile can shape our whole appearance. Unfortunately, a lot of people are unable to achieve the perfect smile.

Tooth enamel is extremely susceptible to stains, which means that you need to work hard to prevent it from happening. This involves cutting out certain foods that are likely to stain your teeth.

To help you out, we’ve put together a guide to the foods (and drinks) that you need to keep off your shopping list.

Coffee/Tea

Hot drinks such as coffee and tea are the number one offenders for staining teeth. This is because tea and coffee are both dark in colour, which will play a part in leaving stains. Coffee is also acidic in nature – acidic foods should always be avoided.

For those who are addicted to coffee, adding a little more milk can lessen the chance of stains happening – but it’s still likely to happen. You should avoid drinking dark tea and stick to the green kind – healthier in every way.

Balsamic Vinegar

It’s tastes so good but is so bad for the smile. Due to being extremely rich, the dark colour makes it a top contender for ruining your perfect white teeth. You can still enjoy it in moderation, but you’ll be much better swapping to a lighter style of vinegar.

Berries

We’re constantly told that berries are the best fruit to eat, due to the fact that they are low in sugar and full of antioxidants. However, they aren’t so friendly to our teeth. This is simply because of their dark colour, which unfortunately discolours our teeth after eating. Have you dropped a raspberry onto a clean item of clothing? It’s just as hard to remove the stains from your teeth.

Curry

Our favourite Indian dish isn’t so good for the teeth. Because of the colour of most curries, they have a bad habit of staining the teeth yellow. We’re not saying to give up eating curry completely, just to remember to brush your teeth afterwards.

Red Wine

As with every other item on our list, it’s the colour of red wine that makes it harmful to teeth. Instead of turning the teeth yellow (which is easier to remove), it turns it into a weird shade of grey. Red wine contains tannins (as does tea), which are renowned for being staining saboteurs. You’ll have to stick to drinking white!
