3 Important Things to Consider Before Getting Your Tattoo

Posted on : September 18, 2015  By : Wellness

Getting a new, or your very first, tattoo requires a lot of thought and consideration. For one, it’s not one of those temporary stick on tattoo’s from the Toy Store; you can’t rub your skin and find  your tattoo magically vanish under your thumb. For another, you should understand the many different processes of tattooing before you go under the needle.

We’ve spoken about how tattoo’s are an ancient art form before, what you might not know are the different methods available for tattooing. Before you pick out your design, you should do your research.

Knowing The Methods

There are three different methods of tattooing.

  1. Piercing- This method requires an object to pass into the skin and back out of the same hole again, depositing the ink as it goes. This is a reasonably modern method utilised for an electric tattoo machine with a needle (or cluster of needles) moving in rapid unity between 80 and 150 times per second.
  2. Cutting- Cutting is an old method of tattooing in countries such as New Zealand and Virginia. It includes scratching or scraping the skin to part the skin cells before the colour pigment is rubbed into the cut.
  3. Puncturing– Puncturing requires a greater force and a higher angle to puncture the skin than piercing and is a common practice among Burma monks and places in Thailand.

If you want you’re tattoo to have a little history behind it, you might want to consider one of the older methods of tattooing. Doing your research into the exact procedure will help you understand and appreciate the art form more. Of course, most people use the traditional, clinical method of tattooing.

Knowing Your Location

Where are you wanting your tattoo?

Think about your work and yourself. If you’re not a committed person, you might want to keep your tattoo in a place where you’re less likely to grow bored of it. On the other hand, think about how big your tattoo is going to be. If it spans the length of your thumb, is placing it in the center of your back or on the top of your shoulder really suitable?

If you’re unsure about the position of your tattoo, ask your tattooist for their honest opinion. You may find that you like what they suggest.

Know Yourself

There are many reasons for a person to get a tattoo. It could sometimes be for a bit of fun, other times it could be for a personal reason. Whichever the case, you need to think about yourself, your body and how you handle pain.

It’s no secret that getting a tattoo hurts. Some people can handle this more than others however, and where you decide to get your tattoo can greatly affect how much it will hurt. Areas where there’s more fat and muscle than bone will be less painful than getting joint tattoo’s for instance.
