Think Before You Ink!

Posted on : June 25, 2014  By : Wellness

It is estimated that 16% of people with tattoos regret having them done. The more planning that goes into your design of choice, the more likely it is that you won’t end up regretting your tattoo design and placement.

So, what steps can you take in order to prevent tattoo regret?

  • Don’t drink & ink

Let’s face it, you are probably going to regret that time you had too much tequila and got a tattoo of Tweety Bird. Wearing a sombrero. On your forearm.

We get it – making good decisions when you’re drunk is often not an option, but it might be worthwhile explaining to friends that they should stop you when you get that drunken tattoo impulse.

  • Use spell check

Tattooists are notorious for copying whatever text you give them. They pride themselves on being great artists, not Oxford Scholars, so don’t expect them to spell check your text-based tattoo design. Save yourself a lifetime of regret and humiliation; enter your text in Google and make sure it’s all spelt correctly.

  • Think of the future: Wedding day, children, career prospects.

Is a tattoo likely to be an issue, or even a liability, if it is visible when you’re wearing your work attire? This may well depend on what industry you intend to work in, but it’s worth considering what career you wish to pursue before you go ahead and get that neck tattoo.

Ladies, you may wish to think about your wedding day and how you want to look in your dress.

  • Check any foreign language designs with a reputable source

That Chinese symbol may look really sweet, and Google may tell you that it means beauty or grace, but it’s worth checking it out with a native speaker before you go ahead and get inked.

  • Rethink getting the name of your current partner

You never know what will happen in the future, so bear this in mind when you are considering getting the name of a partner tattooed on your body.

  • Ignore fads & trends

Trends change, and fads die out, so don’t be tempted to get a permanent design of something which is en vogue now, but might not be a few months or years down the line.

  • Try a rehearsal run of the tattoo

Henna, temporary transfer tattoos, or even DIY Sharpie designs will give you an idea of if you like a placement on your body.  Think of it as test driving the car before you buy it.
