Skinvertising: Being Paid To Sport a Tattoo of a Company Logo

Posted on : August 1, 2014  By : Wellness

Would you get a tattoo of a company logo or website for money or a payrise?

It turns out that, actually, many people would.

A number of employees at Rapid Realty in New York City are now getting tattoos after the firm offered a 15 per cent pay rise in exchange for the permanent advertising. As the company did not specify where, or how big, the tattoo must be, many see this as an easy way to make money.

The video below shows employees of Rapid Realty getting their logo tattoos!

Skinvertisements became immensely popular during the early 2000s, when websites first took off. Many branded themselves with casino names and even pornography website logos, but found that their tattoos actually lasted longer than the actual brands.

Joe Tamargo sports many brand tattoos, having 15 websites tattooed on his body. Tamargo claims to have made more than $200,000 in this way. He knows all too well that the tattoos last longer than the companies, expressing “When I tell them the story, they’re like, ‘Yo, that’s pretty cool. I’m going to check out those websites’, and then they get there and there’s nothing on the website.”

The first skinvertisement was sold in 2003 on the back of the head of an Illinois man named Jim Nelson. A company named CI Host paid Jim Nelson $7,000 for the ink, with the promise that he would leave the logo for at least five years. Once again, the tattoo lasted longer than the company did.

Karolyne Williams sold advertisement space on her forehead so she could finance her child’s schooling and college fees.  GoldenPalace.com paid her $10,000 to ink their logo above her eyebrows. She has since cleverly covered the tattoo up with carefully placed bangs!

Mark Greenlaw sold space on his body on eBay to the highest bidder. He said that ‘I wanted to make sure that my wife and kids had money while I was off training’. Billy Gibby, also known as Billy the Billboard said ‘I did it to make sure my kids wouldn’t be homeless’. Billy has approximately 37 tattoos of companies, most of them on his face.
