Does Your Tattoo Mean What You Think It Does?

Posted on : November 25, 2014  By : Wellness

One of the most popular styles of tattoo is Kanji; this refers to the characters and symbols used in Japanese and Asian languages. They are chosen because they are exotic, elegant and often people desire a beautiful tattoo that means something written in this style; however, tattooing foreign symbols onto your body poses a very common problem; how can you be sure what it means?

It isn’t uncommon for a tattoo artist to get it wrong! In fact this is one of the most common reasons why people look to get their tattoo removed. Many people find out that their meaningful tattoo actually means something completely different an irrelevant, so of course, this is the time for laser tattoo removal, or you could be stuck with this embarrassing symbol for the rest of your life!

Why Do People Get it Wrong?

Well, the obvious answer is that the tattoo artist probably doesn’t read or write Kanji themselves so they aren’t sure whether it’s correct or not. So if you are thinking about getting a symbolic tattoo, remember to check and double check and TRIPLE check that the symbol is correct!

In some cases, if you have ventured to an irresponsible tattoo parlour, for example if you’ve been on a drunken night or you’re abroad, they may purposely tattoo you with an incorrect symbol – this happens less often, however, it has occurred.

The Problem

Unfortunately, the internet can be the cause of this problem, Google search does not always have the correct answers! Just because a certain symbol shows up when you search for ‘Japanese symbol for love’ doesn’t mean that it is fact. Plus, Kanji symbols are known to have a variety of meanings; take a look at Britney Spears for example; her tattoo is supposed to mean ‘mysterious’, which of course has more positive and sexy connotations, however the symbol itself is more often read in Kanji as ‘strange’, which has much more negative connotations!

How to Find Out if Yours Is Wrong

To find out if yours is incorrect, do your research! Find a range of images to check if it looks right. Kanji is drawn in a very specific and traditional way, therefore a tattoo artist with little experience in this language is more than likely to have got something wrong!
